SkipperCast

How SkipperCast reads the water

Every source retains its original location, coverage and clock. Forecast issue time, valid time, buoy observation time, analysis reference time, retrieval time and report assembly time are different. Missing sources remain missing. Retrieving an older record does not make it current.

Forecasts and local checks

The shared workspace retains its seven-day GFS and ECMWF comparison. The local SLO report uses independently supported NWS, NOAA and CDIP records. Its shorter horizon does not shorten the global-model view, and global models do not fill gaps in local sources.

Local conditions windows use continuous supported daylight hours, essential wind and wave values, source freshness and applicable marine warnings. A relative lull is labelled separately from a qualified screening window. These low-confidence planning heuristics are not bite forecasts, catch probabilities or clearance for a harbor entrance or full return route.

Waves, tides, shore and diving

CDIP nearshore samples retain their original valid times and sampling interval. A nearby three-hour sample is not an hourly measurement. Samples are not extended before the first frame or beyond the last supported frame. Offshore seas do not establish breakers at a beach.

Tides are station predictions in feet above MLLW. Port San Luis is a reference; Morro Bay tides and entrance currents can differ. Tide height does not establish slack water. Buoy observations retain the station and observation time, independently of the selected forecast date.

Beach-health status retains its published status, sample date when supplied and retrieval clock. A missing sample date stays unknown. An open status is not continuous testing or clearance to enter the water. Underwater visibility requires a dated in-water observation. Surface currents cannot clear a dive.

Terrain, habitat and legal sources

Terrain retains measured, chart-estimate and model identities, native missing-data masks, original source measurements and unresolved datum limits. Display relief and smoothing do not create measurements. Illustrative water is not a live tide. These views are not navigation charts.

Species habitat scores are physical planning proxies. Survey coverage, historical shoreline and access coordinates do not establish present fish, current beach access or legal take. Live habitat publication requires the reviewed source binding, rights and current screening checks. Official current rules, gear, seasons and species identification remain separate duties. CDFW protected-area geometry retains its attribution and does not replace legal boundary definitions.

History and fishing evidence

Buoy history uses recorded UTC-hour means, actual contributing years, counts and gaps. Monthly medians and tenth-to-ninetieth percentile bands describe the collected record. They are not a standard thirty-year climatology, a fishing forecast or reef-bottom temperature.

Fleet displays preserve original trip dates, species labels, reported/retained/released distinctions and original publisher links. Retrieval time is not publication time. Whole-trip counts do not identify a reef, establish shore or dive results, or predict future catches. Missing reports do not mean zero catch.

Source clocks and missing/stale states remain visible. A configured schedule alone is not evidence of ongoing successful collection. The readable page reports source records; it does not calculate a separate trip-safety score.
